Integrative Narrative
Since coming to CSUMB I always wanted to improve my Japanese reading and writing skills. Although I am raised by Japanese parents and having Japanese heritage I wasn't knowledgeable of how to read or write in Japanese. I especially wanted to focus on reading Kanji and writing formal Japanese. Taking some of the classes at CSUMB and study abroad to Nagasaki made me reach to a level that I wanted to reach ever since I was in high school. When I study abroad to Nagasaki University during my third year of college, I learned more Japanese vocabulary terms and Japanese writing skills. Also, while study abroad to Japan I took Japanese writing and reading comprehension courses that improved my Japanese writing and reading skills drastically. When I came back to CSUMB from my study abroad experience I had more confidence in writing and reading. From first entering college to study abroad experience, I could notice that my reading and writing skills have improved. From the improvement, I would like to use my knowledge that I have acquired and go to graduate school in Japan and pursue my goal of getting a master's degree. Now I will present to you my Japanese language and culture courses that I have took to help grow to the level I am at.
From MLO 1 Language and communication, I 've learned to further complete the part of speaking formal Japanese language. From previous times when speaking Japanese I've learning a lot of phrases from friends and speaking informal Japanese language. But speaking formal language to an higher authority is an challenge for me, coming to CSUMB and using formal language to Japanese professors was a good practice for me and also for my future jobs. From MLO 1 I have taken Japanese 300 which is an advanced Japanese communication course which really helped me us formal Japanese language. After taking this class, I would like to use what I have learned and apply it in my future job in Japan. In addition, another class that I took is the course that I have taken when I study abroad to Japan. One of the class that I took was Intermediate reading comprehension. In the class, I was able to expand and strengthen my reading and communication skills. In the future I would like to apply it when going to Japan in the future.
From the learning from MLO 2 I learned many Japanese cultures that I have never heard of from previous times. The knowledge from MLO 2 gave more of an Japanese culture that nobody will maybe not know. Going to Japan and living in Japan for one year as well as learning the cultures through classes in Japan and also learning more Japanese culture at CSUMB. One of the course that helped me learn new things about Japan is my Japanese 215 class that I took. In this class, it has broaden my knowledge of Japanese culture in various ways. From learning different kinds of things in the class, I would like to use my knowledge and teach other American people about Japanese culture and also globally. Another class that I took was my Japanese 311 class. In the class I was able to broaden my knowledge of how Japanese culture is in Japan. From this class, I would like to let my relatives and friends in Japan know what kind of issues there is in Japan and let them have the awareness of the different types of issues in Japan. Also, what kind of culture American culture is compared to Japanese culture.
From my secondary culture which is MLO 3, I 've learned many culture such as Chinese culture that I have taken during my study abroad experience. From MLO 3 I have learned how Chinese culture is from various aspects such as reading actual Chinese characters, to writing Chinese poetry and their own specific religion. From learning Chinese culture for the first time, I would want to know more Chinese culture and take more classes to broaden my knowledge. In the future I would possibly want to teach my friends and family my knowledge of Chinese and what I have learned in school. By seeing my assignments for Chinese culture you can see what kind of homework I have done when I study abroad to Nagasaki University.
From the point of MLO 4 the class that used research and technology the most was in the course called WLC 400 or my capstone research project, in the course I learned how to navigate through different types of information on the search for credible and reliable sources. Also, I have learned how to use google forum and being able to excel from the data we got from sending our surveys for our capstone project. Thanks to the help from our advisers and my peers I can see how I have learned how to use research and technology more than I used to. From the research and technology the skills that I've learned from capstone and Japanese presentation class from CSUMB, it gave me the extra confidence boost for my future job in the future with using my presentation skills as well as researching to a further understanding.
Although I spend one year study abroad and gained a lot of experience along the way, I could feel not only on my improvement on reading and writing in Japanese, or my knowledge of Japanese culture, but I am globally immersed in all kinds of languages and cultures. Without MLO 5 I would never had the chance to study abroad to Japan and improve my Japanese reading and writing skills. I feel like my study abroad experience was a meaningful one because I got to learn many things that I didn't know living in Japan compared to living in America. Reflecting on what I have done on reading and writing when I study abroad has gave me an opportunity to reach my goal and my dream since coming to CSUMB.
