JAPN 395: Special Topics, Advanced Japanese
Description:
Studies a particular topic relative to the Japanese language or cultures. May be repeated for credit when topics vary. (Credit/ No Credit Available)
Reflective Narrative: This is a special class where I am a teacher's assistant for Dr. Yoshiko Saito-Abbott in Beginning Japanese 1. In the special class I learned how to organize and teach Japanese language to the students in a effective way. Also, I learned how to help students with their Japanese and their pronunciation. During my experience of being a teacher's assistant there was some struggles with teaching Japanese to the students so they will understand better. Also, being aware of what kind of things the teacher needs before saying it. Another thing that I thought it was really difficult is trying to motivate the students in the class to be aware of how putting extra effort in Japanese language will help themselves improve. While attending class every Tuesdays and Thursdays, some of the students try to learn Japanese but some students don't try to improve and just give up. In my opinion, learning a language is hard but it wouldn't help if you motivate yourself to put in the extra effort.
Overall, being a teacher's assistant helped me move around to different students individually and see their level of Japanese. It gave me different teaching styles to go along with seeing the level of Japanese for each of the students. In addition, it also gave me an extra confidence boost on trying to be a leader among the students.
Most of all, the human relationship skills to help myself get ready for getting a job in Japan. It taught me an awareness around the classroom just like for in a company in Japan. This whole experience has helped me mentally prepare for what is there to come when working in Japan.
