Reflective Narrative:
This class is a service learning course that meets for the requirement of MLO 1 and 2. This class is an upper division service learning in which the students are Junior or Senior standing. But mostly are seniors for most of the cases. In this course we had to do 30 hours of service at a school in which we had to teach kids about Japanese Language and culture. Before going to each of our service learning sites or schools we need to create or think of an lesson plan for what are we going to teach to the kids. In the class we had to reflection papers in relation to your own service learning site in which the school that you went to. The reflection papers was mainly for us to understand what we have learned, what did we do, what kinds of things was hard and how would you fix it, what is your next goal, how would you reach your goal in the next class and such. The reflection papers we had to write it in Japanese. If you click here you can see my Site Reflection. Another thing that we did was reading reflections in which there was a presentation for each week of the reading and we had to write in English or Japanese on what you have learned and quote it. For the reading presentation we are grouped with Japanese exchange students and we had to read in regards to social justice issues and building a global community. If you click here you can see my reading reflections and the if you click here you can see my reading discussion presentation. Also, in the service learning class we did a community scan presentation to show what kinds of things are around the school. If you click here you can see my community scan presentation. In the middle of the semester we had to midterm presentation, in the presentation we had to list all of the activities that we did with the kids so far, during our service learning what we had learned while doing it, what went well, what was hard, how do you solve what was hard, and what's our main goal was the content. If you click here you can see my midterm presentation. For our final, we had to do a final presentation in which we had to connect our service learning outcomes to what we had learned to what we had learned individually in the whole service learning experience with connecting the service learning outcomes. If you click here you can see my final presentation.
By connecting with the students we are able to further understand and promote social justice and ideas such as: compassion, social responsibility, justice, and diversity. Through the service learning outcomes the course forced us to think more critically while going to our service learning site. In the class, it gave us and good opportunity for being students in college and learning Japanese language and culture from a different perspective but it gave us an type of opportunity to towards cross-cultural and social justice state of mind. After the class we had a better understanding of importance of inequity that is in our education system within the community around my service learning site and also within our society as a whole too.
For the service learning site we chose Ord Terrace Elementary School in Seaside, California. In the elementary school, the population was mostly Hispanic. Most of the community around the school was different schools such as adult school. Also, around the community there was Filipino market and other non-Hispanic things so I thought the school will be a mix with races but it wasn't. While going to my service learning site me and my group mates have noticed that in elementary schools that we went to does have the curriculum or class that offers a language. Mainly it was social injustice to the students. Most of the students are really eager to learn a new language. The thing that I was most surprised at, is that all of the students mostly memorize different phrases in Japanese so quickly. Especially when we teach our portion of the topic about Japanese language and culture, they will still remember things that we taught them three or four days ago.
From, taking this class I have another mindset of how the world is and how the community is as a whole. Most of all it gave me the mentality of thinking globally. In this I have learned different types of skills such as Japanese presentation, lesson plans and most of all teaching in front of people or kids in which never experienced before. Teaching was a key factor for me because, I have taught adults in Japan and I have taught kids so looking at age gap and how they are was a good experience for me. If I have the possibility of teaching I would want to use these skills in the future career.
