Reflective Narrative:
5.1 As many of the students say, having to study abroad to Japan was beneficial for me to learn the language as well as reading and reading. Not only I was able to learn Japanese language and reading in the classroom but I got to learn it in Japan which gave me confidence to read and write in Japanese. I went to Nagasaki University in which the Japanese language courses have three levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The three levels are separated in different categories such as reading comprehension, kanji, listening, writing and others. In addition to the part that there was culture courses that taught in English too. It was a prefect setting for me to be able to reach my goal since entering California State University Monterey Bay. Going to Nagasaki University helped me see different places I never seen before, and also making friends along the way. If you click here you can see my flicker project in which I took pictures to see what kind of places I went. In regarding to study abroad we learned how to do LESCANT in which it was learned in Maxmizing Study Abroad class. If you click here you can see my study abroad class and what we have done.
One of the things that I was able to immerse myself in a Japanese environment was my weekly baseball club I was in. Every time there was practice at the baseball field we would say good morning out loud and be respectful to other team members. Since I had experience playing baseball in America, learning Japanese baseball style of play gave me the knowledge of Japanese baseball culture in Japan. Also, the type of language that they used while playing baseball was different. While I was playing I was able to adapt to the language. While I was playing baseball in Japan, I realized that not just academic standpoint of language immersion and cultural internalization but playing a sport at another country also gave me the knowledge of language and cultural internalization.
I always thought that we can learn language immersion and cultural internalization in school but I didn't think that it is also connected to sports too. From, that point I believed that adapting to a new community, environment, culture, and language also in the work or business world is important. From what I have learned in the club in Japan and in school, I would like to use it when I work in Japan in the future. In business, I would like to use what I learned when I go to another country that I have never been to. In addition, I feel like going to a new place you will learn many things such as language, culture and other things. In my opinion, going into a place to immerse yourself to an new environment is difficult to do but getting used to new things is a common thing wherever you go.
