JAPN 311: Social Issues in Japan
Description As the drive to rebuild modern Japan after WWII has slowed, latent and new social problems have become visible. This course offers interdisciplinary perspectives on issues such as care of the elderly and homeless, equal treatment of minorities, gender and labor issues, domestic and world ecological concerns, and relevant institutions that promote or attack prejudice towards heterogeneous social groups. Taught in English. (Credit/No Credit Available)(Prereq: Junior or Senior Standing)
Reflective Narrative: In this course I have learned social issues in Japan. In this course I have learned crucial problems in Japan during the past and as well as this generation as of now. In this course what I learned is Japan's social issue of suicide, business work, stress, and social issues around Japan from different prefectures. For the most part, because of the nature of this course I feel that this class helped me fulfill my MLO 2 cultural knowledge. From learning different kinds social issues in Japan, I feel that I have learned a lot from this course. From this course, doing presentation has helped get the understanding of how Japanese culture has the relation to Japan's social issue. In addition to what I have found interesting about this course is that I thought we are learning about social issue only in Japan but we also learned social issues in other countries as well, such as China, Korea, and other Asian countries. From learning from social issues in different prefectures in Japan we did a group presentation and also the social issues in other Asian countries and we did another group presentation on that. Overall this class gave a great impact, or background knowledge of how life is in Japan. This gave me the information that working in Japan is kind of hard and become lots of stress and suicide issue is also a main problem now. So this class gave me an understanding that Japan is good to visit but working in Japan is kind of strict. Overall, this class gave me an background knowledge of how Japan is in a nut shell and what kind of social social issue is there as of now.
