JAPN 420: Maximizing Study Abroad
Description:
Your study abroad experience is potentially a rich opportunity for you to enhance your language skills and deepen your understanding of other cultures, people and their practices. This course provides the resources to help you prepare for your study abroad experiences. This course is taught in English.
Reflective Narrative:
For this course its designed for students who are going to study abroad to Japan. It teaches you different types of tools that you can use while you are there. In addition, we learned about a project called LESCANT that we needed to complete while study abroad.
LESCANT stands for:
L-Language
E-Environment
S-Social Organization
C-Context
A-Authority
N-Non Verbal
T-Time
During our study abroad we had to submit a photo with each of the themes and type up a description on why it fits to each of the theme, every month. If you click here you can see my flicker photo project that I did in Japan. Having to learn from this class, it was important to do the assignments while study abroad to Japan. Some of the things that was beneficial for me that we did in the class is we had a time where past study abroad students came into our classroom and we can ask any type of questions we had about study abroad to Japan. Most of the questions that was said and answered, I learned a lot prior to going to Japan. Overall, this class was a good experience for me to know what is there to know and what to expect in Japan. One area that I wish to develop further is continuing to take pictures in Japan and see the differences in comparing it to America for seeing the cultures and also thinking about working in Japan or America. Next time when I go to Japan I would want to experience the way I learned in this class and use it when I go to other countries for traveling.
