English Language and Culture (Taken when I study abroad to Nagasaki University. Nagasaki, Japan) (2 Units)
Reflective Narrative:
3.1 For MLO 3 it mainly focuses on other cultures other than Japan. Basically other countries culture. To the point of thinking, perspectives, behavioral practices and cultural products. The course that I have taken in Japan is Chinese culture, I have learned different Chinese characters and traditional Chinese culture. Some of the things that I did is Chinese poem style assignment that helped me learn and understand how Chinese style poem is. If you click here you can see my assignment. With Chinese culture, I learned it through different videos. I also have learned that Japanese behavioral practice and Chinese behavioral practice is kind of similar. It gave me an understanding that Japan heavily influenced by China. To the point that Kanji that Japan use is initially from China and Japan have created their own version of Chinese character and turned it into Kanji was the point that I have learned. Of course the cultural products are different from Japan and China but all in all it was mostly the same from past to present day Japan, also China too. If you click here, you can see my evidence at the bottom to see my final essay and two other homework assignments that I did, in relation to Chinese culture.
3.2 Learning Chinese culture helped me learn different things that I never knew before. Since I only had knowledge of American culture and Japanese culture, it gave me a chance to compare two other countries cultures I already know to Chinese culture. In my point of view, learning Chinese culture gave me the type of knowledge where I can see their traditional culture to Japanese culture. Since some of the culture in China is similar to Japan, it was interesting to see what kinds of culture are there in China. Regarding to how Chinese culture is and there traditional language, culture, their ways of thinking and their behavioral practices, it helped me understand more about Chinese culture in a broader standpoint. If you click here you can see my Chinese culture assignment in which I wrote about traditional Chinese culture and language. Learning a different culture for the first time gave me an understanding of how their country is. In the future, I would like to know cultures from around the world and be able to travel to different countries and not misunderstand things in a bad way. I think learning a culture is a good way to be in a diverse community like the United States.
